How To Minimize Summer Stress
Summer can present many opportunities for fun, but summer stress is also extremely common and can take a significant toll. The following strategies can be especially timely during the summer season. If you don’t have your kids in some type of summer camp (or even if you do), you’ll need to have some enriching activities to keep them happy and stimulated so boredom doesn’t create misery for all of you. Allowing your older children to plan activities for younger kids (like ‘treasure hunts’ around the house, or games of hide-and-seek) can be a great way to keep everyone occupied in a constructive way How To Reduce The Stress of Traveling With Kids The comedian Jerry Seinfeld once said, "There is no such thing as fun for the whole family," and many people who have vacationed with young children would agree. Whether you're trying to coax an antsy toddler to stay sitting (and quiet!), answering the endlessly asked question, "How much longer now?," or desperately trying to avoid being the parents with the screaming baby, travel with kids can be stressful! Luckily, there are some steps you can take before and during your trip to greatly cut down on your travel stress and prove that there are some exceptions to Seinfeld’s Law. Surgery Stress Relief Techniques Having surgery can bring a lot of stress. Aside from worrying about potential complications, even minor surgery (if there is such a thing) involves risk and requires recovery time. Those who need surgery are often facing stress in other areas of life as well; usually, there’s a health condition that necessitates the surgery, and perhaps financial stress involved with the hospital and doctor bills. It’s already pretty clear that surgery and related health events can lead to additional stress. But did you know that the stress surrounding surgery can actually impact health outcomes? Or, in more optimistic language, stress relief before and after surgery can improve health outcomes? Cognitive Therapy for Surgery Success Have you ever waited for someone who was late showing up somewhere? The minutes seem to drag on, and it can become very frustrating. Healing from surgery at a slower rate than you’d like can bring this type of frustration—compounded! Know what to expect in terms of healing time and recovery. Then, keep in mind that everyone’s different. It’s important to know if you’re not healing at the expected rate (so you can discuss this with your doctor), and it’ll help your emotional state if recovery seems to be taking longer than you’d like, but is within the realm of what is to be expected. Importance of Vacations Many people don’t take vacations often enough. In fact, according to a poll on this site, around half of readers don't take annual vacations; in fact, many readers never take them! And now with increasing frequency, when we do take vacations, we often bring work along with us, keeping ourselves essentially still in the work mindset we’re trying to escape. This is unfortunate for several reasons.. Playcation Strategies for Stress Relief With widespread financial stress, increased job stress and fear of layoffs, many people are scaling down their vacation plans. According to a recent survey conducted by Kelton Research and commissioned by Dave and Busters (full disclosure: I've worked with Dave and Busters professionally), among a nationwide sample of 1000 respondents, while 1 in 3 say that they need a good dose of fun even more than they need financial relief, 70% aren't planning on going anywhere for the summer. And, given that almost 4 in 5 admit that they don't have as much fun in their daily lives as they'd like, this is unfortunate.
